Transportation of a dead body from China to the home country of the deceased requires fulfillment of certain procedures. The following steps are involved in the transportation of a deceased person from China to Pakistan:
Ø When a Pakistan national passes away, the first step is to obtain a ‘Death Certificate’ from the concerned hospital. In most cases, it is the concerned hospital which conveys the information about the passing of a Pakistan national to the Pakistan Embassy. However, in a few cases, when the deceased is a student, the Embassy receives the information through the relevant university.
Ø After clearing any pending hospital bills, a family member, friend of the deceased or university representative is required to sign the hospital documents. In the meantime, the Embassy issues a certificate or attests a letter authorizing family member, friend or university representative to handle the dead body.
Ø The hospital staff keeps the dead body in cold storage at the hospital’s mortuary before the body is transferred to funeral home.
Ø If the dead body is kept at a hospital located within Beijing area, the Embassy collects the dead body from the hospital and moves it to the funeral home. But if dead body is at a hospital outside the Beijing area, the funeral home, at an additional cost, collects and transports the body from the hospital to the funeral home.
Ø The funeral home, after receiving a stipulated amount as fee, prepares the dead body for air transportation to Pakistan. The preparatory process includes bathing the body as per Islamic rituals, applying preservation chemicals on the dead body, wrapping it in a white cloth and placing the body in a wooden coffin. Funeral home takes around 3-5 days to complete this process.
Ø Customs Clearing Agents are then hired to transport the dead body from funeral home to airport a day before flight departure. During the intervening period, the dead body is kept in airport’s cold storage, from where it is taken directly to airplane for transportation to Pakistan.
Ø Pakistan Embassy extends maximum possible facilitation to the deceased person’s family and friends for the completion of this formal process.
